Motorola Moto 360 smartwatch is back in stock

Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch is back in stock in the manufacturer’s online store in both black and metal finish. Best Buy also has the two color options of device listed as available to order in the United States.

Moto 360 sold out hours after its retail launch in early September alongside the new Moto G and the 2014 Moto X. The Android Wear gadget is undoubtedly the one of the most anticipated wearable devices to launch this year.

A recent firmware update to the Moto 360 brought improvements to its battery life. Motorola is yet to comment on how many units of the smartwatch it sold this far.

Apple Watch production rumored to start in January

Apple presented its first wearable earlier this month, but the release of the Apple Watch is only going to happen next year. That said, the company was a bit vague on details when it came to this subject.

In these situations, though, rumors sometimes come to the rescue. The latest one on this matter, originating in Taiwan, says we should expect mass production for the Apple Watch to start in January.

That's because Apple wants to have it in stores in February, right before Valentine's Day. There's apparently going to be only one company making the Apple Watch, and that's Quanta. The Taiwanese OEM is looking to hire a lot of people for the plant that will handle the production for Apple's smartwatch, planning to reach a peak of 40,000 employees in January.

Although Quanta is the exclusive manufacturer of the Apple Watch right now, it's unclear whether this exclusivity has an expiration date attached. On the other hand, some unnamed "industry analysts" believe that if sales of the Apple Watch will go well, there will be a second OEM added at some point next year.

Interestingly, Quanta's deal with Apple might have terms prohibiting it from making smartwatches for any other company but Apple.

Samsung issues statement about the Galaxy Note 4 gap issue

Some early Samsung Galaxy Note 4 adopters reported an imperfect construction on their flagship phablets – a business card fits in the gap between the screen and the metal frame. Now Samsung has come out with an official statement on the matter but it's mostly PR talk.

"The reported issue does not impact the functionality or quality of the Galaxy Note 4. We assure our customers that all Galaxy Note 4 units meet our strict manufacturing and quality control standards," reads Samsung's statement sent to Trusted Reviews.

So, Samsung is aware of the issue but doesn’t consider it a deviation of its "strict" standards. Not all Galaxy Note 4 units are affected by the issue and the company didn’t say if it will correct the problem in future units.

Pre-orders for Samsung's new flagship phablet are already underway in the States and European markets like the UK and Germany. The Galaxy Note 4 launched earlier than planned in its home country of South Korea.

CompareMyMobile: iPhone 5 most often traded to get a new iPhone

CompareMyMobile is a site where users can trade in their old devices to help fund the purchase of a new one. Now that the new iPhones are out, they find themselves on the wishlists of most people - 51.5% of those who traded in a phone, to be precise.

Of them, the overwhelming majority had an older iPhone - just over 88% - and few traded in an Android (7.3% had a Samsung, 3.2% had an HTC). For comparison a third of the people who went for a Galaxy S5 sold an iPhone.

Apple was hoping to draw in Android users with the new iPhone 6 Plus, but that doesn't seem to be working. It's not just that there were few Android trade-ins, 86% said they'll buy an iPhone 6 while only 14% said they're going for the 5.5" iPhone 6 Plus.

The two year old iPhone 5 accounted for the majority of old devices (56%), the 16GB version became the most traded-in device on the site, taking over from the Galaxy S III from a few years ago.

Surprisingly last year's iPhone 5s came in second with just over 20%. Last year's Galaxy flagship, the Galaxy S4, was one of the rarer devices at 1.6% trade-ins, less than even the new HTC One (M8), 1.9%.

Ireland accused of granting tax aids to Apple

Ireland may be in trouble after granting Apple tax breaks and giving it unfair advantage by marking its affairs as "state aid." A preliminary report by the European Commission accuses the country of granting Apple state aid and thus allowing for "selective advantage."

The report cites two rulings in 1991 and 2007 and outlines how Apple Ireland's net profits would be calculated. In the two cases, the Commission requires Ireland to answer for its decisions to lower the tax amount that Apple had to pay.

Regarding marking Apple's operations as "state aid," the report goes on to say:

The aid in question does not appear to be intended to promote the execution of an important project of common European interest nor to remedy to a serious disturbance in the economy of Ireland, nor is it intended to promote culture or heritage conservation.

In a matter of few weeks the Commission will publish the report in question in its Official Journal and then third parties will have one month to submit comments. They'll be taken into consideration as part of the investigation.

Project Ara smartphones will allow module hot-swapping

The recent silence surrounding Google's modular smartphone Project Ara has been broken at the Linaro Connect US 2014 conference. There, Project Ara team leader Paul Eremenko announced that users will be able to swap parts of the modular phone when it's powered on.

For example, if the memory of the phone is full, you'll be able to swap with another memory module and go on with your day. Swapping the battery is also possible without turning the phone off thanks to a power reserve.

The only two parts that will not be hot-swappable are the phone's processor and display. Google is targeting a $50 entry price tag for the Project Ara smartphone. Pricing of the various modular blocks isn't known yet.

Expect the first Project Ara modular smartphone to get its official announcement in January 2015. It will run a modified version of Android L, which will be also interesting to check out.

BlackBerry has another unusual device in the works

Hot on the heels of last week’s BlackBerry Passport launch, a word got out that the company plans to introduce more devices with unconventional design going forward. The head of BlackBerry’s Devices unit, Ron Louks delivered the news in an interview with Reuters.

According to Mr. Louks, the trimming of BlackBerry’s losses allows it to take more risks and introduce more unconventional smartphones in the future. The company will be looking to introduce at least one unconventional device every year.

Furthermore, the high-level BlackBerry executive hinted that the company has a new unconventional device in the works already. Wireless carrier partners have reportedly given positive feedback on the new project.

Despite its quirky design and questionable ergonomics, BlackBerry Passport has so far been well received by the public - it sold out within hours of its retail launch in many outlets and raked in more than 200,000 sales in three days.

First Samsung Galaxy Note 4 units plagued by build issues

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 went earlier on sale than originally planned in order to compete with the iPhone 6 Plus. However, it seems that Samsung's rush has resulted in some defective Galaxy Note 4 units, a report from South Korea suggests.

As you can see, there's a gap between the Galaxy Note 4's 5.7" QHD Super AMOLED display and the metal casing next to it. The report suggests, the gap is wide enough to fit 2 sheets of A4 paper or a business card.

There's no official comment from Samsung regarding the mishap of the number of affected Galaxy Note 4 customers. We guess if there are more such cases, we'll be hearing from the company sooner than later.

In South Korea a SIM-free Galaxy Note 4 will run you at approximately $920, which is the cheapest of any Note phablet so far. Pre-orders of the Galaxy Note 4 are already underway in the US. There, the phone is confirmed to launch on AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile on October 14.

Samsung helps you tell the Galaxy Ace Style LTE apart from the Galaxy Ace 4 by placing a wide, grey accent line on the back cover. Popping it open reveals a 1,900mAh battery. It can last for up to 11 hours of 3G talk time or 9 hours of LTE web browsing.

The single-SIM phone also comes with NFC. It's currently available for purchase in Germany for $199 in black and white.

OnePlus to enter Malaysian and Indian markets

A month ago we told you about a job listing on the official web page of OnePlus. The company was looking to hire a General Manager for India. It was the first step to add India in the official list of markets.

Now OnePlus is doing the same for Malaysia. It has opened the same position - General Manager - for Malaysia. The person who takes the job will be running the OnePlus operations in the country.

OnePlus One has gained a massive interest worldwide because of its flagship specifications and super affordable price. So far OnePlus has had a hard time keeping up with the user demand, but the upcoming expansion should be a good sign, right?

Hopefully the people living in India and Malaysia will soon be able to buy the device officially and on fair prices as well.

Dual-SIM Meizu MX4 leaks with YunOS in tow

A photo and a bunch of screenshots of a dual-SIM Meizu MX4 have made their way to Weibo. The phone is purported to be the Meizu MX4 Mini and the screenshots reveal the phone is running a custom ROM made by retail giant Alibaba.

Dubbed YunOS 3.0, the Android ROM aims to replace Google's services with its own in order to provide more relevant localized content. The screenshots, which you can look at below, show dual-network indicators on the top left.

The mini version of the Meizu MX4 is rumored to sport a 5" display and pack a MediaTek MT6732 chip with a quad-core 64-bit CPU. However, this is still a wild rumor and nothing substantial has leaked so far to confirm it.

It offers an octa-core CPU with four Cortex-A17 cores @ 2.2GHz and four Cortex-A7 cores @ 1.7GHz cores. Furthermore, the company has been leaked to prepare an MX4 Pro. It's going to come with a similarly sized display, but with a bumped resolution of 2,560x1,536.

The Meizu MX4 Pro will reportedly be powered by a Samsung Exynos 5430 chipset, which will feature an octa-core CPU. This will have four Cortex-A17 cores clocked at up to 2.6 GHz, and four Cortex-A15 cores clocked at up to 2.1 GHz. Aiding the top notch SoC will apparently be no less than 4GB of RAM.

Counterclockwise, iPhone 5, iOS 7, Nokia 5800, Microsoft Kin

Counterclockwise is our weekly look back in time at all the interesting things that happened during this week through the years. Late September has witnessed many great things but also a fair share of embarrassing failures, here are the most interesting of them.

Failure to launch

Apple released the iOS 8 update on schedule quickly followed by 8.0.1, which proved to be flawed. This was fixed in 8.0.2 but it's not the first time this has happened.

Last year Apple released the iOS 7 update but that had a vulnerability that could bypass the lockscreen. Apple then quickly released iOS 7.0.2 to address this issue.

The other high-profile issue concerning Apple's latest releases is that the iPhone 6 Plus bends and deforms. Again, this isn’t the first time that Apple has experienced a similar issue, a couple of years ago the new aluminum unibody of the iPhone 5 was plagued by chipping issues.

A legend is born

Throughout the years September has seen the launches of phones that would go on to become legend. In the distant 2008 Google unveiled the T-Mobile G1, better known for being the first Android smartphone. Android has grown to dominate the market but this phone was the one that started it all.

And it had a hardware QWERTY but now hardware keyboards are practically impossible to find on an Android. Another platform underwent a similar transition, Symbian. Announced a few weeks after the G1, the Nokia 5800 became the first touch-only Symbian S60 from Nokia and became one of its best-sellers.

Symbian underwent further changes and switched naming schemes so often it became difficult to track. Two years after that the all-touch Nokia N8 was getting ready to ship, the successor of the 5800 that became famous for its camera (its DNA can be traced in Nokia's current camera phones).

In between the T-Mobile G1 and the Nokia 5800 launches another legend was born, the HTC HD2. In September 2009 we caught our first glimpse of the new TouchFLO 3D interface, the phone itself launched soon after. The HTC HD2 will go down in history as the phone that ran the biggest number of platforms ever – everything safe for Apple software was ported to the HD2 at one point or another.

Not quite legendary

Five years ago Microsoft unveiled the first official images of "Project Pink", which later resulted in the Kin phones. The fruit of the Danger acquisition, the two Kins were kind-of smartphones with hardware QWERTY keyboards and Zune-inspired interfaces.

Microsoft Pink Microsoft Pink

The Microsoft Turtle and Pure

Danger, if you don't know is the company behind the Sidekick devices, but co-founder Andy Rubin left it in 2003 to create Android. Despite the success of Sidekicks (mostly popular in the US) and the massive success of Android, the Kins were killed off a couple of months after they hit store shelves due to weak interest.

A year later Kin was replaced with Microsoft's new darling, Windows Phone 7. WP7 shares a lineage with the Kins as its tile interface is based on the Zune UI too. WP7 itself didn’t make it to legend status either as it was killed a year later in favor of Windows Phone 8.

Windows Phone Series 7 Windows Phone Series 7 Windows Phone Series 7

A look at Windows Phone Series 7: the homescreen, People Hub and Office Hub

While this was going on, the Palm Pre was getting ready for a European launch but Palm's fate was less than envious. We've covered it in previous installments of Counterclockwise, so we'll just mention that at the same time the rumor mill hinted at a potential acquisition by Nokia.

Yes, Nokia had enough money back then to buy companies, though with time the Finnish giant lost its luster and was acquired itself (by Microsoft).

2 billion served

While digging through our archives we found a bit of GSMArena trivia – on September 23 2009 the site reached a milestone of 2 billion pages served.

You can find that counter on our stats page, currently we're closing in on 9 billion pages served since the site's inception in mid-2000.

Sprint opens up Galaxy Note 4 pre-orders

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is hitting the US on October 14, but you can already pre-order the phablet on both AT&T and T-Mobile. Starting yesterday Sprint has also joined the campaign, allowing you to pre-book your unit and make sure you will be among the first adopters.

Sprint is asking $720 for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 if you don’t want to sign a contract, which is lower than the $826 that AT&T demands. However if you are to sign a 2-year commitment Sprint is reducing the price to $350, $50 higher than what the largest GSM carrier in the States charges.

Sprint is also offering a third option for the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 where you pay nothing upfront but spread it out over 24 monthly payments of $30.

Finally, you should know that Sprint will allow you to trade-in your old phone and subsidize the Galaxy Note 4 purchase further. Thanks to a promotion the carrier is running with Samsung, you are guaranteed to get at least $200 for any working phone.

Any interested Sprint subscribers may book their Samsung Galaxy Note 4 units by following the source link below.

Xiaomi gearing up to sell 100,000 units per week in India next month

Xiaomi is gearing up for the festive season in India next month by increasing the availability of devices. Company Vice President Hugo Barra said the company is planning to make provisions to sell 100,000 units per week from the 60,000 they do currently.

Xiaomi recently started selling handsets in India and has been operating exclusively through online retailer Flipkart. In the short amount of time, the company made a reputation for having frustratingly low stock, which is made available through flash sales and goes out of stock in mere seconds.

The ridiculously inexpensive but feature packed Xiaomi Mi 3 was discontinued in India briefly after it was launched but the company plans to bring it back during Diwali, which sales of electronics are at an all-time high in India. It will be sold alongside the Redmi 1S and will later be joined by the Redmi Note.

Samsung launches the new Galaxy Alpha in India

The Galaxy Alpha is Samsung's first smartphone after a while to have a metal-body. It uses an anodized aluminum frame with chamfered edges on the side. The specs of the phone are mostly that of a flagship device but in a smaller body, and as such, it will be competing directly against the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact, which was recently launched in India for ₹44,990.

The Galaxy Alpha will be available in black, white, and gold starting next week. Due to a decision taken by Samsung India recently, the Galaxy Alpha, along with the upcoming Galaxy Note 4, will only be sold through offline retailers.

Week 39 in review: iPhone 6 Plus bending, Galaxy Note 4 launch

The Week In Review is our series meant to recap all the major news of the week, which you might have missed. In Week 39 the spotlights were primarily on Apple again with the iPhone 6 Plus experiencing nasty bending issues. Many rival companies went on to mock Apple with #bendgate becoming quite popular. Meanwhile Apple didn't help its cause as it messed up the iOS 8.0.1 update badly, but at least it fixed things up quicky.

In response to Apple's success with initial sales of the iPhone 6 duet, Samsung pushed sales of the Galaxy Note 4 earlier than expected. The phone is expected to come out a week earlier than initially planned and will launch in more than 140 countries by October. Continuing with Android, alleged Nexus 6 photo appeared next to the LG G3 and Oppo confirms the N3 will come in both stainless steel and alluminum-lithium alloy versions.

Apple iPhone 6 Plus appears prone to accidental bending

It appears that the Apple iPhone 6 Plus is prone to bending under typically benign circumstances. A number of reports around the web suggest that Cupertino’s first phablet has bent its chassis while sitting in a user’s front pocket. With the issue gathering increasing amount of attention throughout the day...

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy Note Edge benchmarked

The Samsung N915L, aka Galaxy Note Edge with Exynos, scored...

Apple officially responds to the iPhone 6 bending controversy

Apple finally broke its silence about the iPhone 6 Plus bending controversy that took over the tech world over the past couple of days. The Cupertino giant told Re/code that the problem is "extremely rare." Despite all the noise surrounding the issue, Apple has so far received a total of nine complaints from customers with bent iPhone 6 devices...

Apple has sold more than 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus smartphones in their opening weekend and Samsung isn't too pleased about the news. As a result, the company is moving the launch date for the Galaxy Note 4 forward. The phablet will launch in South Korea on September 26 instead of early October for all three...

Oppo confirms N3's lightweight aluminum-lithium frame

Oppo is continuing its Oppo N3 teaser campaign that thus far focuses on its unique aluminum-alloy body. Apple released and quickly pulled out iOS 8.0.1 firmware update

Apple released and quickly pulled out iOS 8.0.1 firmware update. HTC's action camera looks like a toy periscope

HTC has sent out invites for October 8 and we were hoping for a Nexus 9 tablet or maybe a water-proof selfie phone but it seems that all the company will unveil is an action camera like GoPro, Sony Action Cam, Contour and others. Unlike them, however, the HTC cam dubbed RECamera will look like a toy periscope...

The Korean manufacturer Pantech is now up for sale

The maker of Android smartphones and tablets Pantech is now up for grabs. The third largest Korean hardware manufacturer and its creditors presented a plan for the sale procedure to the Seoul Central District Court.

Bidders will have until October 7 to submit their offers for the beleaguered manufacturer. Korean heavyweights like Samsung, LG, Hyundai Motor Group, and the network carrier SK Telecom are reportedly among the interested parties. SK Telecom is unofficially viewed as a front-runner.

A purchase by a foreign company is not unlikely either. A number of Chinese and Indian tech giants would gladly place a bid and try to enter the Korean market.

Despite its characterful and well-made devices, Pantech struggled against Samsung and LG in the highly patriotic Korean market. Declining sales forced the company into recording losses in six consecutive quarters.

LG smartwatch with SIM slot headed to Verizon

Since its perpetual competitor, Samsung, has already announced a smartwatch with a built-in SIM card slot for direct mobile data connectivity, you probably won't be surprised to find out that LG wants in on that game too.

An LG VC100 passed through the FCC as a "Smart Watch + CDMA", according to the Commission's own documents (see the image below). This pretty much spells out the fact that we're dealing with a wearable with embedded mobile connectivity, one that won't have to rely on a smartphone - just like Samsung's Gear S. Unlike Samsung's product, though, we assume the VC100 will run Android Wear.

This particular smartwatch is going to be sold by Verizon, an anonymous source says. That's because it's allegedly been spotted in one of Big Red's databases, where it sits neatly alongside other LG devices already launched by the carrier.

Although we don't have an actual picture of the VC100 yet, what is depicted in the image above is its profile, as seen from the rear. So it looks like it will have a design that will fall right in between the company's G Watch (which is much more squared) and G Watch R (which is round). Given the shape here, we expect it to sport a square display, but nothing's certain until it gets properly leaked.

Update: a new report says this may just be LG's previously announced KizOn wearable, which you can use to keep track of your kids. The shape fits, and the dimensions of the two are very close.
